525,600 Minutes
Dear Baby Mack-
Today you are officially 14 weeks old. However, seeing as you were born on your due date and knowing from the time of conception a baby spends approximately 38 weeks in the womb you are really about a year old. It's hard to imagine that already you have been part of our lives for a whole year. Albeit most of that time was spent in my belly but believe me you transformed our lives even then.
I could never have imagined that you would have the ability to make my heart grow bigger every day nor could I have imagined your amazing ability to shoot poop from the changing pad far enough to hit the opposite wall. It's hard for me to believe that you are able to sleep through the jackhammer noise from across the street, that your smile can still leave me breathless, that you can hold and shake a rattle, that you listen so intently while your Daddy reads to you and that just yesterday you rolled from your belly to your back.
Already it seems you're growing up too fast.

What's in a Name
Currently topping the list of nicknames:
The Birdman, Birds, Squawk Box, Mackaroo, Karoo, Macklamore, Macintosh and Mackadoodle
Also, seeing as it is St. Patrick's Day and I was sure that "Mack" was of Irish origin I did a little research into the meaning of the little guy's real name.
The name Mack is of Scottish origin meaning "son of" and Charles is of Germanic origin meaning "free man". I think its funny to think of our baby as "Son of Free Man" (perhaps this could be his Native American name).

Bedtime
...whoever coined the phrase "sleeping like a baby" never had to experience the harsh reality of getting the baby to go to sleep. If "sleeping like a baby" is a metaphor for being at peace then "getting the baby to sleep" must be a metaphor for winning the war. As of late Mack has insisted on nursing about 3 times on each side before he finally passes out in a breastmilk coma about an hour later. The good thing is that this feeding frenzy justifies the pizza and giant piece of leftover chocolate birthday cake that I just devoured.
